However, the Railwaymen’s greatest success has been in the area of youth development. Under widely respected manager, now director of football, Dario Gradi Crewe have been responsible for a conveyor belt of outstanding young players, many who went on to play at the very highest levels. This list includes the likes of Dean Ashton, Danny Murphy, Seth Johnson, Rob Jones, David Vaughan and Nick Powell. On the final day of last season, Crewe fielded an entire first XI of homegrown players.
In the period since John Bowler became chairman, Crewe have enjoyed success both on and off the pitch. The Railwaymen have achieved five promotions including two play-off successes and lifted the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in 2013. Off the pitch, Alex have re-developed Gresty Road into a much improved 10,000 capacity stadium.
Now in his 27th year as chairman of Crewe Alexandra, John Bowler has set the benchmark for sensible and successful stewardship of a professional football club. Previously a marketing director at pharmaceutical company Wellcome, Bowler joined the Crewe board of directors in 1980 and succeeded Norman Rowlinson as chairman in 1987.
This year’s winner of the Contribution to League Football award is John Bowler.
This award is the most prestigious that the Football League makes each year and it recognises an individual who has given a lifetime of dedicated service to the professional game. Previous winners of the award have included such famous names as former Peter Shilton, Dario Gradi and Jimmy Hill.
